More freedom with Joysteer

For most people a car means above all else flexibility, independence and freedom. This independence is especially important for people with a disability.

The development of technical aids in recent years has drastically improved and simplified the modes of individual transport for disabled people. One of the most innovative projects is the steering aid “Joysteer” developed on the Technical High School of Berne in the town of Biel. The Joysteer is an electronic steering system for vehicles used by drivers with a physical disability. After an intensive development process it is now  ready for the market and will be available for purchase in 2009. The system which has been certified be TUEV combines various user elements and can therefore be adjusted to suit the needs vehicles owners with various disabilities.

Steering with feet or hands

The steering system combines electronics with mechanics, whereby the vehicle can be controlled by a joystick or other input devices which can be operated by the driver’s feet or hands. Thanks to the various individually adjustable control elements the Joysteer offers more added value than traditional vehicle steering aids. In this way, driving a car despite of muscular diseases, paralysis or deformation of arms and legs is safe and comfortable.

The system offers a complete solution for the control of steering, brakes, accelerator and all important secondary elements. Handbrake, automatic gear changing, lights, indicators or windscreen wipers can be easily controlled with just one system and a small number of input devices

Force-Feedback for driving sensation

An active driving sensation, even for people with motor disabilities is ensured by an individually programmable Force-Feedback system. The driver receives direct signals through the joystick about his actions, whereby, again a mechanical steering system is simulated. The input devices can be specially adjusted to the needs of drivers of vehicles adapted for disabled people. Two independent systems ensure safety, which can replace each other in the event of one of them becoming damaged or faulty. A team of experts offers comprehensive consultation for the installation and all individual requests.

An example: The mini-steering wheel with accelerator and braking valve is especially suitable for quadriplegics. With this combination, the vehicle is maneuvered by turning a small wheel. Using the other hand the driver can operate the valve for the brakes and accelerator. Buttons which can be placed to suit the driver, control the secondary functions with this system. The system which is compiled from various multi-combinational modules can just as easily be controlled by a steering rod or by one or two foot elements.
