The so-called MediaWheelie is a flexible and dynamically extendable software control station on wheels. The Me-diaWheelie has been developed from a standard wheel-chair in a two-year research in Graz, Austria, at the Uni-versity of Applied Science Joanneum and the Polytechnic Bulme Graz-Gösting.
The new multifunctional wheelchair was tested in prac-tice in 2006 by a twelve year old boy who has cerebral palsy since birth. For the first time in his life, he could go for a drive independently, thanks to the new technology. A joystick allows him to call home. If he would fall over, a relative would be automatically alarmed by radio. But the high-tech wheelie can do even more: It allows web telephony through Skype and GMS Handy and enables the user to control all functions of Microsoft MediaCenter through an integrated computer. The de-veloper of the wheelchair even thought of functions to control all-day electronics at home (e.g. doors, shutters, lights, television, audio equipment etc.) as well as of an emergency call with GPS locating function.
