Hi Ty
what excatly do you want to know?

as far as i can tell does the child need both prothesis or wheelchair around the age when others start to walk or maybe later. it depends on how much you can afford as well because they can both get really expensive. best thing is to talk with the doctor.

I like this website: http://www.kidscanplay.com/

If your body will not have any paralysis in the lower body, he might be better off with prothestis than with a wheelchair.

Good luck!

Dear Caren

You have just detected my main questions perfectly. I wanted to prepare myself and find out when we will need a prosthetic or a wheelchair for our little boy. He will be born in a month and he has only one fully grown leg as well as spina bifida. Of course we are quite worried, so I try to focus on the more pragmatic things in his life.
We do not know yet how far the palsy will go. He first need to greet the light of this world and then undergo his first surgery to fix his back as far as possible. Due date is 17 Mai.
My wife copes with this situation a lot better than me i must confess. However I am glad when I can focus on other things than my feelings.

The website you suggested is mainly about arm prosthesis but it is a interesting page anyway, so, thank you for that.

Kind regards,
Ty

Hi ty

If your son will be able to bare at least some weight on this legs he might want to start with a mobile stander (with his prosthesis). if not he would need a wheelchair when you cant lift him up anymore and he wants to get around. Most children (if their parents can afford it) get a wheelchair around 2/3 years, so quite early. it helps them to develop independently. if they always depend on you or your wife to get carried around (or to drove around in a stroller) he will never grow to an independent personality.

All the best to you, your wife and your baby!!
You are a really strong person, Ty, your son is going to have great parents and with that already the most important thing in his life.

God bless you!
