I want to know if there is a wheelchair that can climb down stairs for emergency purposes, in case of a fire.

yes there is! see here http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/ff/Treppensteiger.jpg but you still need a helper to get up the stairs. the buillding should better install elevators and ramps!

I an emergancy: get out of your wheelchair, push it downstairs and follow on you butt. you might need your wheelchair again downstairs. If you cant do that or the wheelchair breaks, your screwed. I had to do this once, thank god it all went well and i made it out of the building.

Hello Juan,

I did it 1984 and I was allone! I climped with my chair 6 flors down. Your have to go backlings to the stair, hold with both hands the stair-rail, adn go from step to step down.

The method in this video is any differend, but for all that you can see how it goes. icon_wink.gif

When you make it mutch slower, roll slowly with your big wheels from step to step and hold with both hands the handrail all throw this, it is not dangeres and not heavy. Try it! At short stairs with handrail, maybe two or three steps, all wheelchairs can to this. You too! icon_wink.gif
