I would be interested, if I can speak the sign language, can I communicate with this araound the world. So is the sign language a possibility to communicate with everybody (of course who can use it) worldwide?

Hi LoHo,

no this is not possible.
Each language his its own signs. There are even dialects. So German for example is differend in Germany, Austria, Swizerland. Of course its possible to unterstand, but its like the spoken language.
Its a pitty the sign language is not international!

Best regards
Michaela

Hi Loho

Sign language is a natural language (not like esperanto!) and it develops naturally. That is why our language is different in different parts of the world. that is nothing "pitty" or something like that, it's just natural!

It is possible to understand each other even we speak different languages. E.G Swedish and norwegian is quite close. When I speack norwegian a swedish person understands me. the same in sign language: Most SL are quite close so wie understand each other. But there are some SL that have developed completely different. E.g Japanese SL is one sign for one sylable, not as we do: one sign for one meaning.

There is an international SL. but it is artificial but it helps for international event. It's a mixture of everything and sometimes more pantomine than signing.

However: It would be great if you learn it!!

Deaf people can do everything except hear.
