Hi

I found a comment on facebook:

"Did anyone hear Nick Ferrari on his breakfast show on LBC on 24-05-10. He made negative remarks Alison Lapper's statue (Alison Lapper pregnant) suggesting nobody liked looking
at it and when challenged by Ken Livingstone effectively likened it to the same as having to look at diarrhoea on the toilet floor. Such ...disablist comments only serve to reinforce the negative sterotyping of people wth disabilities. I used to really like Nick but I am sickened by his callous and hateful comments."

Sounds aweful!! Does anybody know that guy? I want to send him an email. Alison is a very inspiring person!!

Cheers
Cammy

Confronted with this subject, Programme Director of the LBC News reacted rather disapointing:

"He wasn't rude about her - you are complaining based on hearsay and you are wrong."

That is the whole email.

Wow, how grownup and polite!

And that is a programme director? Sounds more like sulking child or a person who only pretends to be the programme director and really hates him and want to prank him.

Gosh. I can hardly believe it! If i wanst deaf i would boycott that news! This is very sad. he could at least write a polite answer!

Thanks for contacting that "programme director" anyway!

Cheers
Cammy

I have received a more detailed answer now:

Dear Mrs Plattner,

I'm sorry if you think my reply was rude. I take the time to answer all listener emails personally, so my comments are often succinct and to the point.

If you re-read your original email you'll notice that you made a specific allegation against my breakfast show presenter. [...] I have told you he did not make any rude comment about the person you name. He expressed a dis-like for the sculpture that was on the fourth plinth, but he didn't insult the subject of the sculpture. I'm afraid it is very hard to respond to hearsay complaints. They are often wrong. I will always apologise or explain if I feel a presenter has gone too far, but I don't feel in this case the presenter has. At the risk of being told I'm childish I will say again. He didn't insult anyone, he didn't say anything hateful about the handicapped, and he doesn't owe you an apology.

I personally still think it's a very thin line between insulting a sculpture of a person and insulting the person directly. However, I'am glad about this answer above and I hope that they will think a bit more before they talk the next time.

Best wishes

Err... I dont see a difference between insulting the sculpture of a person and insulting the person directly.

What next? Wheelchair racing is like puke on the bed? banghead.gif

Well, i've stopped getting annoyed about people like this. But it's still very sad that some people just dont get it that we are normal people just like them. icon_frown.gif

I have received another Emails from the Programm Director which was very friendly:

I understand your point and Nick is aware that his comment was mis-interpreted. But as I say he didn't intend to insult anyone. We do appreciate constructive feedback so rest assured this will be noted.

This answer is very nice for us!

Sometimes, people just don't think that such comments as Nick's could hurt but if we keep telling people it might help.

Best wishes
